Fly-in Fishing Trip Planning Tips

Plan Ahead and Think 'Light'.

As excitement builds towards your date of departure, it's important to plan ahead for your Stanton Air fly-in vacation. Here are some important pointers that will help ensure the full enjoyment of this unique Canadian adventure.

Don't Over-Pack.

Honestly, most of our guests bring too much equipment and/or food, with the unused items having to make the trip home again! Think carefully about each item you intend to bring. Talk to your pals to avoid duplication. Our flights are subject to a weight re5triction of 650 lbs. of passenger and baggage per flight based on 2 passengers on each flight. Extra flights for excess gear are expensive. You will be surprised how little extra clothing you will need when you properly consider the time of year. Many items you might consider are already supplied by Stanton Air. Check our details.

When you realise that we have equipped our camps with gas BBQ's, non-allergenic foam pillows, folding canvas deck chairs and all the boating equipment you will likely need, you will find that your loads can be remarkably light. Essentially, you should plan on bringing the food you want to eat (less fish of course!. Personal items such as toiletries, sleeping bags and pillow cases and, of course, fishing gear, bait and licenses.

What about a Trolling Motor and Battery, and Those Precious Rods?

If you are certain that you need to bring a trolling motor, we must remind you that aviation regulations dictate that all marine and auto batteries must be carried in acid proof containers with secure tops. If your batteries are not packaged accordingly, we cannot transport them. Also, whether your rods telescope, break down or are full length, we suggest you use cases or bazookas to protect them. This will prevent damage and tangles in our aircraft.

What About Bait & Licenses?

En route to our Orillia base are a number of bait and tackle shops. Most will issue fishing licenses. Those under 18 years of age do not require a license. Here are some outlets that you might consider:

  • Jacobs Bait: On Hwy #11 , just south of Orillia Phone 705-323-91

  • Trombleys Tackle Box: Hwy #12 and West Street Phone 705-327-3474 (a great shop for all kinds of fishing and outdoor gear)

  • Hook and Bow: Hwy #12 at the Narrows Bridge. Phone 705-325-5873

By The Way

We strongly suggest live bait. such as worms, leeches, or frogs. Plan Your Menu, Meal-by-Meal Here is where proper planning can really pay off! Plan each meal. Do not simply empty your fridge into boxes and coolers. Talk to your pals to make sure you are not duplicating. A menu plan will reduce expense, waste and transportation costs. Most groups bring way too much into the camps!

Bring Your Own Drinking Water, and Leave Bottles at Home.

Although all our lakes have clear, safe water, we recommend you only use them for washing up and bathing. Plan to bring your own drinking water in plastic jugs or plastic bottles. Allow for 1 litre per day/person. Please bring cans, not bottles. We will dispose of all your garbage at the end of your trip; however bottles can break and are risky to transport. Better to Arrive a Little Early Than a Little Late. The scheduled time of departure in your confirmation letter is when we plan to lift off, not the time you should arrive at our base. Therefore plan to arrive about 20 minutes early. You will need that time to unload your vehicle, park and complete any paperwork in advance of your flight. Arriving on the dot of your departure time will in fact put us, and everyone scheduled after you - behind schedule!

Back Lakes Bassin' Etiquette

To maintain the quality fishing and pristine settings which draw anglers to remote back
lakes in the first place, keep these guidelines in mind.

• If you pack it in, pack it out. No glass.
• Do not trespass onto / across private property.
• Abide by fire restrictions; do not cut timber.
• Practice selective harvest; release larger fish.
• Leave the campsite better than you found it.
• Properly secure boats & gear before leaving.
• Help maintain well-marked trails for others.
• Enjoy the total outdoor experience, not just the fishing.

Paying Your Account

Paying your account balance in a few days before your trip saves considerable time at our base.

We accept VISA or MasterCard over the phone.

Cash is fine, but be advised that we cannot provide change.

We cannot accept US currency.

Cheques must be received at least thirty (30) days in advance.

No credit is issued for reductions in group numbers received within 72 hours of departure.
